Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Which meetings do I need to attend?
A. All of the New Member Meetings and two of the General Membership Meetings.
Q. What if I miss a meeting?
A. If you miss a required meeting, you must attend an additional General Membership or Council meeting. You can also make up the meeting time by volunteering in the Thrift Shop for an additional 1.5 hours.
Q. How hard or easy is it to complete your community and fundraising hours?
A. New members are only responsible for fulfilling 6 community hours and 6 fundraising hours over the course of five months. We offer a smorgasbord of opportunities during weekdays, evenings and weekends.
Q. What ways do you earn "fundraising" hours vs. "community" hours?
A. You can earn community hours by volunteering at our many community service projects such as Best Foot Forward, Camp Begin Again, Back on Track, Kids in the Kitchen, Project WARM and others. You can earn additional hours by bringing friends or family members to volunteer as well.
You can earn fundraising hours by working in the Thrift Shop, Sweethearts Ball or one of our new fundraising projects. You can earn additional hours by securing sponsorships or donating raffle items to the events.
Q. What and where is the Thrift Shop?
A. The Junior League of Daytona Beach Thrift Shop has been in existence since the 1960's and continues to be one of the most successful thrift stores is our town. It is our largest fundraiser, with profits of about $140,000 annually. They accept donations of: clothing, shoes, accessories, housewares, small appliances, small furniture, electronics, books and children's toys. The Thrift Shop is located on the corner of Orange Avenue and Palmetto Avenue at 200 Orange Avenue in Daytona Beach. They are open Monday - Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. We are moving the Thrift Shop this summer!
Each new member is required to make one donation valued at $75 or more during their provisional course. You can make this donation during any month except October due to Bundles.
Q. What types of women are in the Junior League?
A. The Junior League of Daytona Beach reaches out to women of all races, religions and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to volunteerism. We have women of all ages, single, married, career women, mothers and retired.
Q. Do women in the Junior League have time to be involved with other organizations?
A. Yes! It is our mission to train and develop our members to become civic leaders and to serve our community in many capacities.
Q. When do I need to turn in the New Member application?
A. If you know you are interested in joining, it would be best to turn it in as soon as possible.
Q. When is the first Meeting?
A. The first new member meeting of the League year is Monday, August 4, 2010.
Q. When do I need to pay my League membership fee?
A. August 4, 2010 - but we do offer a payment plan
Q. Do hours from other charities count?
A. No. We have no way of tracking the hours given in service to other charities. Additionally, we carefully select new projects and community partners based on the number of members we have and the number of overall hours we are able to serve. In order to make our projects successful and to serve our community partners, we all need to serve our designated hours.
